Ardud / Erdőd / Erdeed

 

The castle of Erdőd was built by Drágffy Bertalan in 1481. King Zsigmond János has demolished it in 1565. Afterwards the treasury, and from 1629 the Károlyi family hold possession of it. From the ruins of the old castle a new was built in 1730 by Károlyi Sándor. In 1847 Petőfi Sándor and Szendrey Júlia married here, in the chapel of the castle .

From its towers, which were renovated in neogothic style in 1896, only one remained nearly intact, the other three and the castle were ruined at the end of the second World War.
