The first written mention of the town is from the 14th century. The Roman Catholic Church is of 14th century origin, later it was Baroquised. The first Armenian colony settled down in 1637. Their church was built between 1730 and 1733. In the great fire of 1808, 700 houses were burned down. By the end of the 19th century Gyergyószentmiklós became the commercial, industrial and educational centre of the region.
